The Detroit Lions' Sisyphean task to find a cornerback room that can hold its own in a championship run hit another bump in the road when former first-round pick Terrion Arnold was unceremoniously released. Arnold is facing multiple felony charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery, which could lead to a sentence as harsh as life in prison.

Detroit surprised many when they didn't take a cornerback until the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the Arnold release has made one of the thinnest secondaries among contenders across the league even more threadbare. The cupboard is so bare that even veteran special teams aces like Khalil Dorsey could be given a chance to win some snaps.

Dorsey could go from an unheralded backup to a key member of the secondary almost overnight. With how bad the corners have been in recent years, Detroit is not in a position to turn down a player like Dorsey flashing.

Khalil Dorsey could benefit from the Detroit Lions' thin CB room in 2026

Dorsey is at a career crossroads. Even though he feels like someone with a good chance to make the 53-man roster due to his special teams stardom, 2026 could be an inflection point for his career. Can he show head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes that he can hold down full-time cornerback work?

Dorsey is going to get quite a fair shot due to the lack of competition. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. has not shown much due to his constant injury history, Roger McCreary barely played after his trade to the Los Angeles Rams last season, and Rock Ya-Sin is an uninspiring starter. Dorsey's biggest competition might be rookie Keith Abney II.

If Abney, who many believed to be one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NFL Draft due to many assuming he would be picked in the first two rounds, is not ready to handle the physicality of the professional game, there's a good chance that a veteran who has been around the block a few times in Dorsey would be the next man up, especially if the slot is a problem area.

Arnold's departure has thrown an already tenuous situation into even more chaos, but this could also be the perfect opportunity for a handful of players to rise from the proverbial ashes. Dorsey will always be able to secure a roster spot somewhere as a gunner, but his coverage ability might be able to finally shine.
