The Detroit Lions 'hangover' continues to claim victims after Vikings' loss
On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Rams beat the Minnesota Vikings 30-20. The Vikings of course lost their first game of the season to the Detroit Lions last Sunday, then had a short week. Short weeks are not ideal for players, in general.
Still, there's something about playing the Lions that depletes their opponent in their next game. The Detroit Lions "hangover", if you will.
When asked about the "post-Lions hangover" earlier in the season, head coach Dan Campbell was fairly skeptical.
"I don’t know if there’s anything to that,” Campbell said, via Pride of Detroit. “Look, we play a certain style and it’s what we do, and no matter whether we win or lose, we always say, ‘No matter what it is, you’re going to know you were in a dog fight.’ And so, we’re trying to play that way. I don’t know what to say other than that.”
Detroit Lions "hangover" is real, and not so spectacular for their opponents
Here is how it's gone for each Lions' opponent this season the week after playing them.
In Week 1, the Lions beat Stafford and the Rams. In Week 2, the Rams lost to the Arizona Cardinals 41-10.
In Week 2, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Lions. In Week 3, Tampa Bay lost 26-7 to the Denver Broncos.
In Week 3, the Lions beat the Arizona Cardinals. In Week 4, the Cardinals lost 42-14 to the Washington Commanders.
In Week 4, the Lions beat the Seattle Seahawks 42-29. In Week 5, the Seahawks were beaten at home by the New York Giants, 29-20.
The Lions beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6, but the Cowboy had a bye in Week 7.
As mentioned the Lions beat the Vikings 31-29 in Week 7, and Minnesota lost 30-20 on Thursday night.
The Rams, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Seahawks and Vikings have combined to be outscored 168-71 in the game after they played the Lions this season. Their average margin of loss has been 19.4 points, with four by double-digits and the other by nine points.
The "Lions hangover" actually goes back to late last season, when four of their final five opponents who played a game the week after playing them lost that subsequent game.
In Week 8 the Lions play the Tennessee Titans, who'll then play the New England Patriots in Week 9 in what seems like a good opportunity to break the curse.
