The Detroit Lions are no longer the only NFC North team reeling after the sudden retirement of their elite center.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter on X, the Chicago Bears' Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman is retiring from the NFL.

Dalman, 27, played just five seasons in the NFL after being selected in the fourth round out of Stanford by the Atlanta Falcons. Dalman spent four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before signing a three-year, $42 million deal with the Bears.
With the Bears, Dalman was selected to the Pro Bowl after starting all 17 games for the NFC North champions as a part of their revamped offensive line. On Pro Football Focus, Dalman graded out to a 77.5 overall grade, which was sixth among all centers in 2025. His 78.9 run-blocking grade was seventh, as well.
Dalman's retirement is a seismic loss for the Bears, who both have a young quarterback in Caleb Williams and an explosive run game between D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. Williams came close to being the first Bears QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a regular season.
Swift reached career highs in rushing yards (1,087) and rushing touchdowns (9), while Monangai rushed for 783 yards and five TDs as a seventh-round rookie.
Lions now have the Bears to worry about in the center market
This latest twist is a double-edged sword for the Lions. The sudden need for a center will draw the Bears' resources away from their other needs, such as pass rush. That could play into the Lions' hands as it may take them out of the Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson sweepstakes.
It also creates the possibility that the Bears will have a weaker offensive line next season, as Lions' fans are well aware of how much a downgrade at center can negatively affect the rest of the OL.

On the other hand, Dalman's retirement thrusts the Bears into a center market headlined by Tyler Linderbaum. If the Lions are pursuing a center, and not just shifting guard Tate Ratledge, then the Bears could end up swiping the Lions' preferred choice.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Bears are already hosting former Washington Commanders' Tyler Biadasz. So if Biadasz was the Lions' top choice at center, there's now the sudden possibility that they'll instead face him twice a year in a competitive NFC North, which would be a frustrating outcome for fans hoping for an active offseason for the Lions.
Dalman's retirement is a shocking development in the days leading up to free agency, and the ripple effect of that decision is one Lions fans will need to keep a close eye on.
