5 Free Agent Wide Receivers the Detroit Lions Should Target
By Kent Platte
Alshon Jeffery
Intentionally last on this list is Alshon Jeffery. He’s the biggest name in free agency for receiver, and has the most notable production, so why am I not higher on him as a pickup? First, it’s doubtful he ever actually hits the free market. The Bears have an opportunity to place the franchise tag on him and frankly it might be the best option for all involved. Second, I’m not convinced he can stay healthy. After an injury plagued rookie season, Jeffery had a career year in 2013. After that, he had a solid but not noteworthy campaign in 2014 before the injury bug struck again in 2015. He was productive when he played, but reliable to play every week he is not.

Third is the cost. Alshon Jeffery has never looked like more than a strong number 2 receiver, and while there’s no shame in that he is looking to be paid as a premiere number 1. The Detroit Lions have some money this season, but not to be paid to a player who will likely never live up to his paycheck. One constant in the free agents I’ve targeted is that I think they can be acquired for a reasonable cost that they will out play. Jeffery is the opposite.
What do you think, Lions fans? Do you like the wide receivers I’ve pegged as possible options? Is there someone you disagree with and feel we should steer completely clear? Do you think I’m selling someone else short by not including them on this list? Let us know in the comments or get ahold of us on Twitter @SideLionReport or myself @MathBomb!
