In one of life’s weird conundrums, the Detroit Lions stumblebum of a GM, Matt Millen, is a member of the NFL’s “Competition Committee.” If there is a less competitive GM in the NFL, I dare you to name him. Yet somehow, someway, the porn ’stached goon is a member in good standing of the NFL’s most prestigious and influential rules making committee.
The main duty of the competition committee is to oversee competition (duh!), maintain the integrity of the game, often doing so by suggesting league wide rule changes.
Doing my due diligence as a member in good standing of [...]

Over the last day, the only actual news from the Lions was word of another free agent signing. An extremely minor free agent signing. They inked linebacker Alfred Fincher, who had spent his entire career, all 3 years of it, with the New Orleans Saints.
I’m assuming this was a signing aimed at shoring up the Lions sad sack special teams, as there would be no other reason to sign Fincher, his being a career backup. The best we can hope for is his helping on special teams, as there is absolutely no reason to expect a linebacker who made all [...]
On Tuesday, the Lions signed free agent linebacker Gilbert Gardner, who played with the Titans in 2007.
Though the Lions do need a linebacker or three, this signing is strictly a move to help shore up Detroit’s awful special teams. Gardner is a career backup as a linebacker, but has made a name for himself on special teams. We all remember the special teams debacle during the Cowboys game in week 14. The Lions’ kick coverage was so bad, Rod Marinelli essentially gave up, and had Jason Hanson pooch his kickoffs. At least the Lions realize there is an issue, and [...]
Reading between the lines: Roy Williams OK with being a “Lion for life.” I don’t believe him…
In what is quickly turning into a continuing series here at SideLion Report, today we read between the lines with the Lions number one wide receiver, Roy Williams. The diva wide out, going into the final year of his contract, spoke with the Detroit media.
Just as we have with the porn ’stached goon, Mike Martz and Jim Colletto, SLR dissects Williams’ Q & A with the Detroit beat writers, in order to tell you what he was really thinking…
To start, Roy Williams was asked about the trade rumors…
Williams: “If it’s a football decision, it’s a dumb decision. But if it’s [...]
Denver’s Champ Bailey went to bat for his brother Boss Bailey today, dissing the Lions with the following statement…
“They didn’t use him right in Detroit,” Champ Bailey said. “We’re going to use him right here. I’ll make sure of that.”
Let me get a few things off my chest in regard to Champ’s derogatory comment.
1. Champ Bailey rarely, if ever, saw his brother play in Detroit.
2. For that matter, neither did anyone else. Thanks to his paper-maché knees, Boss was never on the field enough to be used in any way, let alone “the right way.”
3. When Boss did somehow find [...]
The latest member of the Detroit Lions to speak to the media is new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto. He gave his thoughts on several pressing issues, such as what positions the Lions may target early in the draft, why Kevin Jones was cut, and what to expect in 2008 from Drew Stanton, George Foster and Jonathan Scott.
Of course, much of what was said was filtered for media consumption. So much as I did with the porn ’stached goon and Mike Martz, SideLion Report reads between the lines to reveal what Colletto was really thinking…
Colletto was asked which is the greater [...]
At Mlive today, Lions beat writer Killer Kowalski let loose with this disturbing nugget of wisdom.
Look for the Lions to pursue a middle backer later in the draft and let him learn for a year behind a veteran. One possibility is Oklahoma’s Curtis Lofton in the second round because he appears to have the intangibles — intelligence and instincts — that Marinelli’s looking for.
If that should happen, don’t be surprised if the Lions immediately move Lenon to the middle and have Alex Lewis slated to start on the strong side.
Did I read that correctly? Rod Marinelli would have Paris [...]
Rumors were flying late Friday afternoon regarding the Lions and Pacman Jones. According to Jones’ agent, 3 teams were interested in the controversial cornerback, one being Detroit. The Lions have denied having much interest, as they have looked into the Pacman “situation,” and decided against going further.
But when you are talking about someone as talented as Pacman Jones, the door is never closed. The Lions have been known to change their mind, as shown by the re-signing of Tatum Bell, whom all thought was done as a Lion. Their defense needs players, and loony tunes though he may be, Pacman [...]
I brought up the cannibalistic tendencies of Chuck Darcy yesterday. But he’s not the only one who’s been speaking. Over the past week, other Detroit Lions have spoken out about one thing or another. Some of it contradictory…
QB in waiting Drew Stanton had kind words for Mike Martz.
“The big thing is that I learned a lot from Coach Martz … as far as my mechanics are concerned, but also the game itself,” Stanton said. “He’s so knowledgeable, and I remember writing down everything that came out of his mouth.”
Who knows if Stanton will ever live up to his 2nd round [...]
When introduced to the Detroit media yesterday, the Lions new defensive tackle “war-daddy,” Chuck Darby, regaled to all his favorite meal.
“A war-daddy is a man who comes in with his sword, any given time, every game,” Darby said. “I believe in eating hearts, and I believe in everybody around me. That’s what D-linemen do. D-linemen eat hearts.”
If eating hearts will allow Darby to also devour QB’s and running backs on Sundays, I’m all for it! But as we all know, there’s more to a balanced diet than the hearts of the opposing team.
War-Daddy is hungry…
A “war-daddy” does not live on [...]
