Reading between the lines: Roy Williams OK with being a “Lion for life.” I don’t believe him…

In what is quickly turning into a continuing series here at SideLion Report, today we read between the lines with the Lions number one wide receiver, Roy Williams. The diva wide out, going into the final year of his contract, spoke with the Detroit media.

Just as we have with the porn ‘stached goon, Mike Martz and Jim Colletto, SLR dissects Williams’ Q & A with the Detroit beat writers, in order to tell you what he was really thinking…

To start, Roy Williams was asked about the trade rumors…

Williams: “If it’s a football decision, it’s a dumb decision. But if it’s a business decision, then it’s going to be pretty good. I just do what I can. I’m here right now.”

The truth: “When Marinelli told me there was no way I was being traded, I figured if it’s the Lions making a football or business decision, it’s going to be a dumb decision. As long as they cut the check, I’ll do what I can. I’m here for the time being.”

Williams continues…

Williams: “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’m going to play ball wherever it’s at.”

The truth: I hope it happens, I sincerely hope it happens. If it doesn’t, I’ll play ball as long I’m getting paid.”

Williams was then asked if he wanted to stay in the D.

Williams: “Oh, yeah. I want to stay here. I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

The truth: “Stay here? In Detroit? Get serious. I go where the money takes me. But if that ends up to be Detroit, then I’ll say all the right things, like //giggle// they are headed in the right direction. //giggle//

What about a contract extension?

Williams: “I’m ready to do whatever. If they want to make me a Lion for life, I’m good with that. If not, I’m just going to play my type of ball and see what happens after that.”

The truth: “I’m ready to go where ever. If they want me to be a Lion for life, they best back up the Brinks truck, I don’t come cheap. If not, someone will overpay me to play my type of ball, and see what happens after that.”

Being in the final year of his contract, Williams was asked if he ever worried about injury, or thought about skipping, or complaining about, voluntary workouts?

Williams: “Not at all, because I’d be hurting myself and I’m hurting this team. I’m not one of those guys where I’m going to be mad at you so we can get something done. I’m just going to do what I do. I’m a man of my word, a man of my work, so we can get something done like that.”

The truth: “First off, if you believe these workouts are actually ‘voluntary,‘ you’re more clueless than you look. Of course I worry about injury, and thought about holding out. But I need to get to the level of a Barry Sanders before I could get away with skipping off season workouts. Barry was the king of skipping ‘voluntary‘ workouts.”

Williams gave his thoughts on the Lions new offense…

Williams: “I’ve always said we’ve got to run the football. If we can run the football, that’s going to bring that safety down. There’s not too many corners in this league that can stop us one-on-one on the outside, and that’s for anybody. That’s Champ Bailey, Al Harris, whoever it might be, the best in the biz.”

The truth: “I’ve always said they need to throw me the damn ball! As we can’t even run the football out of a wet paper bag, I’m stuck trying to beat double teams on the outside. You try and beat Champ Baily or Al Harris, the best in the biz, with the safety helping. Can’t be done.”

Williams admitted he needs to study the playbook more, as he has slacked in the past…

Williams: “The lightbulb finally went off. I’m the oldest one in this group besides Mike Furrey. I have to be the leader of this group — like, the real leader of this group. So therefore we’re going to watch film together when we’re not with the coaches. I’m going to have the guys come out to my house and have food and drinks and everything for those guys, and we’re going to know our opponent better than they know themselves.”

The truth: “I never had to study anything in high school. You think I ever had to study at Texas? Please. The lightbulb’s a little dim, so I have my work cut out for me. At least I helped get Martz canned. I have to be the leader of the group, as you can’t expect me to follow a slow white guy like Furrey. I plan on having wide receiver slumber parties where we can watch porn, have beer and weed and everything for those guys. We’re going to be BFF’s!”

Williams then touched on his nagging injuries…

Williams: “I’m just getting myself in shape, and it’s not because it’s the last year of my contract. I feel I’m a good enough player that something’s going to happen anyway, whether it’s good or bad. So I’m just putting myself in the best situation I can be in.”

The truth: “I’m getting in the best of shape, of course it’s because it’s the last year of my contract. I feel I’m a good enough player that something’s going to happen anyway. Being a Lion though, that something is going to be bad or worse. So I’m just picturing myself playing in the best situation that isn’t Detroit.”
