Myles Garrett will no longer be a part of the dysfunctional Cleveland Browns. And, Penei Sewell's flip to Jared Goff's blindside just became even more important.
The future Hall of Famer, who most recently broke the single-season sack record in 2025, is headed to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, a 2027 first round pick, edge rusher Jared Verse, and other draft compensation. It's a wild trade to kick off what's sure to be a busy few days post-June 1.
It's a shocking move, though, especially considering the monster extension Cleveland doled out to Garrett just a year ago. Still, he'll get to finally compete for a Super Bowl, something he emphasized a desire for when he initially was playing hardball with the Browns prior to that deal.
This now also threatens the Detroit Lions' window of opportunity for a Super Bowl.
Lions handed a subliminal L after latest blockbuster trade
There are plenty of Lions fans that would've loved to have seen Detroit make a move like this during such a window. However, a package like this - one which involves Verse, especially - would've meant that the Lions would have likely had to part with someone like Aidan Hutchinson in a deal. That basically defeats the purpose of even trying to acquire him.
That said, this still bites the Lions. They play Los Angeles a grand total of zero times this season, thanks to the teams' fourth place schedule. However, that could mean they're set for a showdown in the postseason against one another, possibly in the NFC Championship game.
It's a little hard to see how the Lions' very fresh offensive line holds up against a player like Garrett, in addition to one that rosters Byron Young (12 sacks in 2025).

Anything can happen, obviously, and maybe Detroit manages to piece together such a fantastic offensive line that even Garrett can't consistently penetrate. But, looking back at the last two Super Bowl winning teams in the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks, it's clear that investing in your edge rusher room and defensive line matters.
It's something that fans can continue to prod Brad Holmes about all they want, but bottom line is, the Lions have missed their window of opportunity to even attempt to net someone like Garrett. Now, they'll have to wait and see how well their line develops throughout the year, and will probably be holding their fingers crossed behind their back hoping to avoid the Rams in the postseason altogether.
