Aidan Hutchinson knows what some Lions fans (and Brad Holmes) would rather ignore

Now that the Detroit Lions have risen to being a perennial contender, the idea they are in a "Super Bowl window" is easy to put forth. Despite general manager Brad Holmes denying the notion every time he gets an opportunity, that window to win a Super Bowl with the core of the roster as it is right now absolutely exists.

Since reaching the NFC Championship Game to end the 2023 season, a one-and-done playoff exit in 2024 and last year's non-playoff campaign has narrowed that Super Bowl window for the Lions. The window is still absolutely open, but to deny it exists (or that it has narrowed, if we acknowledge it exists) is to ignore basic NFL reality in deference to, to paraphrase Holmes. not operating with windows in mind.

The competitive balance of the NFL does not care if you don't operate in what amounts to "win now" windows. You'd better strike when the iron is hot, or keep the iron hot by continuing to strike. As the Lions continue to set aside money to cover big contract extensions, the challenge to keep this Super Bowl window as open as possible continues to grow.

Aidan Hutchinson knows the basic reality for the Lions in 2026 (and beyond)

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was among the Lions' players who spoke to the media after the team's OTA practice last Friday.

When asked if he feels a general level of increased intensity this year, from the front office on down, Hutchinson started with something Holmes probably doesn't totally agree with.

I mean, look, we know we're in a window,” Hutchinson said. “So every year is kind of the same, the same intensity with the guys we've got.”

Via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Hutchinson was then asked what he considers the Lions' window.

"A window of we've got a lot of great players, and we can do some (expletive), that's for sure."

The Lions are collectively attempting to recapture a fire may have faded just enough to make a difference last season, and things are aligning nicely for a rebound campaign in 2026 (a softer schedule, etc.).

But Hutchinson, and anyone who's willing to acknowledge it, knows the Super Bowl window for this group as it's currently constructed is not quite as wide as it was. And it will only get narrower with each year that passes without it being paid off.
