Ben Johnson gets lofty ranking among NFL offensive play-callers
It's not always perfect (see the third quarter on a far too regular basis), but Ben Johnson has quickly become one of the best offensive minds in the NFL over two seasons as the Lions' offensive coordinator. He has gotten the best out of Jared Goff, and head coach Dan Campbell's aggressive mode allows him freedom to be creative.
Pro Football Network ranked NFL offensive play-callers. After Andy Reid, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, Johnson comes in at No. 4.
"Ben Johnson’s schematic creativity — evidenced by his willingness to deploy virtually every run concept under the sun — was part of what made him an attractive head coaching candidate over the past two offseasons. The Lions couldn’t be happier that Johnson turned down overtures, enabling him to return for a third season in Detroit."
The Lions may only have one more season with Johnson calling plays before he takes a head coaching job. But he's surely already looking for ways to keep evolving his scheme to stay a step head of opposing defenses next season.
