The Detroit Lions will open the 2023 season Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. They are course not expected to beat the defending Super Bowl champions, as 6.5-point underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook and others). But it does promise to be an exciting, high-scoring game.
Around this point each week going forward, we'll review how the previous week's prop bets came out, good or bad. But since this is Week 1, there's nothing to review, take accounting of, laud or lament.
With the sportsbook you can find each bet noted, here are out top Week 1 prop bets for the Lions against the Chiefs in Week 1.
Top Detroit Lions prop bets for Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs
QB Jared Goff, Over 35.5 pass attempts (-120, DraftKings Sportsbook)
From a fantasy football angle, Goff is a must-start for Week 1. The Lions will have to keep pace with a high-rolling Chiefs offense, which will drive pass volume and the Chiefs being without defensive tackle Chris Jones on Thursday night will make things a lot easier for the Detroit offense overall.
Betting the over on 35.5 pass attempts for Goff this week is low-hanging fruit, which is probably why it's -120 on DraftKings. But it's a comfortable bet to make, and try to find bigger profit afterward if you're so inclined.
RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Over 31.5 receiving yards (-114, FanDuel Sportsbook)
Gibbs is sure to be heavily involved in his NFL debut Thursday night, particularly in the passing game and maybe even beyond the short/screen game. The Chiefs allowed the most receptions and the fourth-most receiving yards to running backs last season, and Gibbs is lined up to be only behind Amon-Ra St. Brown for targets from Goff. The receiving yardage over-under prop for the rookie back has moved up quickly.
On DraftKings Sportsbook, the over on the Gibbs' receiving yards prop against the Chiefs is even more playable (30.5, -115). A little parlay with the over on 3.5 receptions for Gibbs (-132 on FanDuel; -110 on Draft Kings) could work well.
RB David Montgomery, Anytime Touchdown (+115, FanDuel Sportsbook; +105, DraftKings Sportsbook)
Not to be forgotten with all the buzz around Gibbs, Montgomery is stepping into a more traditional lead back role for the Lions and the goal line role vacated by Jamaal Williams. That's not say he'll score 17 touchdowns this year, but the former Bear will not lack for touches and opportunities to find the paint.
There will be production and touchdowns to go around for the Lions' offense Thursday night. A bet on Montgomery scoring anytime in the game feels like stealing at plus-money.
