With the NFL preseason beginning to get going for the Detroit Lions, the focus will begin to shift from the daily grind of training camp on to the finality of roster decisions and the depth chart.
Already, the Lions are beginning to focus on what comes next. Jobs are being competed for, and Thursday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals will go a long way toward determining what spots are no longer up for grabs.
One of those positions is at cornerback, where the Lions have a major question opposite D.J. Reed. After the release of Terrion Arnold, the spot is up for grabs and anyone could be in the mix to replace him. Arguably, the player with the best chance should be Nick Whiteside given his very strong camp to this point.
Notably, Dan Campbell isn't tipping his hand as it relates to the cornerback room. As he explained, the Lions have fantastic depth no matter who is considered, and he's seen plenty of strengths from all the combatants who are in the mix for roles.
"It's a good group. Obviously (D.J.) Reed's down right now, but I don't feel like that's a significant injury. It's a soft tissue. He'll be back, so that's a good thing. I feel like Rock (Ya-Sin's) having a good camp. I feel like (Nick) Whiteside's had a very good camp. Roger (McCreary) can cover. He's had some ups and downs, but he can cover. We got (Kalil) Dorsey. (Keith) Abney. I like the group. (Ennis) Rakestraw, he's had some ups and downs, he needs to string a few days together of some good stuff, but he can do that. He's gifted."
While Whiteside is described as one of the faces in the crowd in this analysis, it's clear he's been much more than that. Campbell has specifically lauded him before plenty of practices, and it will be telling to see how much run he gets as a top cornerback option. Given what he's done in practice and late last season, it's fair to say he is the most interesting option the Lions have.
With a strong opening statement against Cincinnati, Whiteside could lock down the role and make sure everyone else is fighting for second team.
Whiteside not looking ahead to winning battle for a starting role
Even though Whiteside could be the leader in the clubhouse after the first few weeks of camp and could lock down a job with a strong preseason, he is not putting the cart before the horse or looking ahead in the least bit to what might come next.
As Whiteside explained to the "Brad Galli Show," while he's enjoyed a fantastic start to camp, he is simply trying to keep the momentum going day by day and win his individual reps.
"It's been good, but (I've) still got a long way to go. Just trying to be better than I was the day before and just trying to stack days and take it to another level. Just taking it one day at a time (in order) to show I can be reliable and trustworthy."

Whatever happens this preseason and whatever role he earns, Whiteside will be at peace. The reasoning? He believes he has put everything he can out on the field and hasn't left any stones unturned to this point.
"I think my mindset is the work's already been put in. Whatever God has for me is for me, so there's no point of stressing about it. Just take it one day at a time and be able to play free because like I said, it's already written by God. Whatever God's got for me, it would never pass me."
Whiteside looks like one of the most exciting young players the Lions have for 2026. His opening statement is the most important one to watch in the battle to see who will lock down the defensive backfield this year.
