As members of the Detroit Lions' offensive line begin to jockeying into position during the dog days of training camp, one former OL will be taking on a very different role in the organization.
On Wednesday, the Lions announced changes to player personnel and football operations staff. The most notable new addition, former Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, is among the names listed, with his official role being the Lions' "Personnel Advisor."
One unexpected name also stands out: Jamarco Jones. The former Lions offensive tackle will now be a member of the scouting department as a "Scouting Fellow."
The move likely signals the end of Jones' playing career, at least for the time being, as he learns the ins and out of scouting. Jones played in 38 games in the NFL, starting seven of them, with the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, and the Lions.
Jones was drafted by the Seahawks in the fifth-round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He made his NFL debut in 2019, starting three of the Seahawks 15 games that season.
Jones played two more seasons with the Seahawks, including spending some time at guard, before joining the Titans in 2022. Jones never suited up for the Titans in the regular season as he missed the entire 2022 season. In 2023, after a series of training camp fights, the Titans released him.
Jones did not sign on with any team during the 2023 season.
A short stint with the Lions opened a new door for Jones
A year after his release from the Titans, the Lions signed Jones, where he eventually found a home in the team's practice squad. Jones played four total snaps on the Lions' active roster in 2024: one in the thrilling comeback victory against the Houston Texans and three in the Thanksgiving nail-biter against the Chicago Bears.
Jones remained with the Lions in 2025, signing a reserve/future contract, with the hope that he'd continue to fortify the OT depth. But in a sign of things to come for the 2025 Detroit Lions, just one day after their frustrating Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers head coach Dan Campbell announced that offensive tackle Jamarco Jones would miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

The Lions struggled to stay afloat in the left tackle spot in 2025, with Giovanni Manu and Dan Skipper filling in for the banged-up Taylor Decker. With the depth behind LT Penei Sewell still in question in 2026, Jones' name had been curiously missing from the news wire throughout this offseason almost a year removed from his ankle injury.
Now we have that answer, and it's incredibly cool to see the Lions give Jones the opportunity to pursue a potential career in scouting despite his short tenure with the team.
