The Detroit Lions are suddenly in desperate need of help at the cornerback position after Terrion Arnold's arrest and subsequent release. Now, the position group is alarmingly thin behind D.J. Reed.
As a result, Dan Campbell's team has been linked to multiple veteran cornerbacks still available in free agency. Most recently, Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton listed them as a landing spot for former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers defender Trevon Diggs.
Moton pitched a late-career resurgence for the cornerback, saying, "Once a ball hawk in the Cowboys' secondary, Diggs can rediscover his tip-top form if healthy ahead of the 2026 term."
It doesn't matter how badly Detroit needs another cornerback to add to the rotation. Diggs isn't the answer they're looking for.
Lions shouldn't fall into the Trevon Diggs trap after releasing Terrion Arnold
The Lions' current depth chart at cornerback isn't enough to start the season with, especially in a year with such high expectations. Behind Reed, Detroit is relying on 30-year-old Rock Ya-Sin, special teams contributor Khalil Dorsey, and rookie fifth-round pick Keith Abney II to play significant roles. Veteran Roger McCreary and third-year player Ennis Rakestraw Jr. will help hold things down in the slot.
It's clear that Detroit needs to add another cornerback to the roster, but it shouldn't be Diggs.
The veteran cornerback may only be 28 years old, but injuries have accelerated his career timeline. He was clearly not the same player he used to be last season, leading to his release from the Cowboys.

The Packers took a chance on him at the end of the season, but they only gave him 34 total snaps on defense and released him in January.
Diggs has always played a boom-or-bust brand of football, leading to plenty of interceptions throughout his career. Now that he has seemingly lost a step, he simply doesn't have the athleticism to play that style of defense.
Even if he has fully recovered from the injuries that led to the end of his Cowboys career, there's no guarantee that Diggs can be a capable starter again. The Lions don't need to be the team to find out.
Detroit would be better off either seeking out a trade for a reliable veteran or signing a free agent like Adoree' Jackson or Marshon Lattimore to a low-cost deal. There's no easy way out of the current cornerback situation, but there are better options than signing Diggs.
