Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa became a fan favorite in his rookie season in the NFL.

His spectacular one-handed catches left Lions fans in awe, showing great potential as a future star for the team’s offense. In his rookie season with the Lions, the 2025 third-round selection at No. 70 overall, wide receiver from Arkansas, TeSlaa recorded 16 receptions for 239 yards and six touchdowns.

Entering the 2026 season, TeSlaa has the opportunity to take a major leap forward in yardage and overall impact within the Lions' wide receiver room. The loss of Kalif Raymond to the Lions' bitter NFC North division rival, the Chicago Bears, this offseason opened the door for TeSlaa to make a jump.

TeSlaa steps into new role at wide receiver for the Lions

Last season, Raymond was just ahead of TeSlaa among Lions wide receivers in receiving yards, recording 24 receptions for 289 yards and one touchdown. With Raymond now gone, TeSlaa becomes the third option at wide receiver behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, who are both coming off 1,000-plus yard receiving seasons.

Sam LaPorta is also expected to be back at full strength for the Lions at tight end after missing a majority of last season with a back injury that required surgery. Before his injury, LaPorta collected 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns in nine games played.

TeSlaa could etch a role within the Lions' offense as a consistent red-zone threat thanks to his hands and size, and could be an excellent short-yardage target for Goff, just as Raymond was in 2025.

Utilizing TeSlaa as a red-zone threat, specifically, could be greatly beneficial to the rest of the teams' offense. It opens the door for run-friendly defensive coverages if effective, and could boost Detroit's success rate from inside the 20 and 10 if he's a consistent target for Goff.

Outside of Jahmyr Gibbs in the rushing game, quarterback Jared Goff will rely on St. Brown, Williams, TeSlaa, and LaPorta as his primary targets. TeSlaa's improvement from his rookie season could play a pivotal role in the Lions reclaiming the NFC North crown in what will be a competitive division.

The Lions are coming off a 2025 season, in which they finished with a 9-8 overall record and lacked the offensive firepower fans were accustomed to seeing with the teams that won back-to-back division titles and two playoff games.

TeSlaa's improvement will further open up the Lions offense as they team looks to find a rhythm under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. While Lions fans are confident in TeSlaa's potential many have their doubts about Petzing and hope that his playcalling has a positive impact on the second-year wide receiver.
