Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown is off to a historic start in 2025

The Detroit Lions’ offense has been rolling after a slow start in Week 1, and as expected, Amon-Ra St. Brown has been right in the middle of it.

Through four games, St. Brown has caught 27 passes for 307 yards and a league-leading six touchdowns. He was shut out of the end zone in Week 1 but has since scored in Detroit’s last three games.

Detroit’s fifth-year star receiver is on a torrid pace right now, and has joined some truly elite company after the Lions’ first four games.

Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to knock out spot in Lions' Mount Rushmore

You might know Randy Moss’ 2007 campaign as one of the most dominant individual seasons in NFL history. He caught 98 passes for 1,493 yards and 23 receiving touchdowns– the latter of which is a single-season record that still stands. New England went 16-0 in the regular season that year before being upset by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

But, I digress. Back to Detroit, where Jared Goff and St. Brown are making a convincing argument for being the NFL’s deadliest quarterback-receiver combination.

St. Brown’s tightrope route-running skills paired with Goff’s pinpoint accuracy have given teams fits for over four years now, and their chemistry has gotten to the point where it’s like they share a brain on the field sometimes.

“If I throw it a little bit behind him, he’ll slow his body down and it’ll look like I threw it right there,” Goff said on Sept. 18. It’s a quarterback’s best friend and it makes me want to keep throwing it to him when he does that. He’s as good as they get in our game, I’ve said that a million times, and I’m lucky to play with him.”

St. Brown is the first NFL player with six receiving touchdowns in his team's first four games of the season since Calvin Ridley did it in 2018. His six touchdowns in Detroit’s first four games are second all-time in Lions history during that frame, after Calvin Johnson hauled in eight in the first four games of 2011.

He’s come up big in some major moments already, like when he caught the game-sealing pass on 4th and 2 in the Lions’s primetime win over Baltimore or when he scored a career-high three touchdowns against the Bears in former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s return to Detroit.

Head coach Dan Campbell referred to St Brown’s connection with Goff as a “security blanket.”

"Those two guys, the rapport they've got, the connection they have, it's special,” he said after St. Brown hauled in seven passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ 34-10 win over Cleveland on Sunday. “Having that is always going to make you feel more secure."

Beyond his statistical output, St. Brown has drawn praise for his blocking in the run game this season as Detroit has currently rushed for the sixth-most yards in the NFL. Fellow Lions receiver Kalif Raymond called him a “maniac” as a blocker.

Though his blocking has drawn more national attention this year, St. Brown said on Sunday that he’s always approached it the same way, although he credited receivers coach Scottie Montgomery with putting him in an even better position this year.

“I wouldn't say my attitude towards blocking has changed, like it hasn't gotten better,” St. Brown said. “I would just say maybe knowing who to block, understanding run scheme more ... 100% I've done better at that.”

St. Brown has been as reliable as they come throughout his time in Detroit, and a major reason why this year’s offense has seen little drop off to begin the year after significant changes to the offensive line and coaching staff. If he can keep around this pace and add another elite season to his belt, we might be talking about one of the best players of his era, period.

Not bad for a fourth-rounder.
