Ever since he came to the Detroit Lions, Jared Goff has evolved into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. In 2026, he could finally generate some award buzz for his hard work.

Goff has had some great seasons with the Lions, but hasn't received nearly enough love for his solid statistical performances. In spite of putting up 130 touchdowns and throwing for over 4,000 yards every season since 2022, Goff hasn't received much MVP buzz.

That could change drastically this season. The Lions figure to have the same offensive power that they have in previous years, and with a better connection with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, Goff could get back to the comfort he felt in previous seasons.

As a result, Goff could be a dark horse for league MVP honors. Entering the 2026 season, NFL.com analyst Dan Parr ranked nine players he believes will be fighting for recognition this year. Goff came in at No. 3 on his list, and the reasoning is simple. A big bounce-back season is likely for Goff in a variety of ways.

"His game isn’t built on sizzling highlights, but he’s in a rare category when it comes to consistently providing top-tier production. HIs MVP campaign will go as the Lions go, and with a very manageable schedule, I like Detroit’s chances to bounce back."

"Nothing will be more critical in determining Goff and the Lions’ success than the play of the new-look offensive line, with All-Pro Penei Sewell flipping from right to left tackle, free-agent signee Cade Mays stepping in at center and first-round pick Blake Miller likely to replace Sewell on the right side."

"Goff has the weaponry to make things happen. With clean pockets, he should rack up big numbers connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs. In fact, with David Montgomery now in Houston, Gibbs could be in for a career year that ultimately diminishes Goff’s MVP standing, but this is still a quarterback’s award."

It's true that Goff could fight Gibbs for MVP recognition, but it's also true that the award is always more likely to go to a quarterback if the numbers are close. Goff has been one of the most deserving quarterbacks for accolade in recent years, and hasn't found a way to break through. With an easier schedule on paper, the Lions could have a great shot to finally get him over the hump.

Goff believes offensive line will be able to jell before 2026 season

Whether Goff becomes a legitimate MVP candidate will revolve mostly around if Detroit's rebuilt offensive line can come together in time for the season. So far, the early returns are good during OTA sessions, and the quarterback knows things will only get better as the offseason continues.

As Goff explained, he's excited to see the competition continue so that the Lions get the best people for the job up front. It's a realty he currently sees playing out before his eyes every day in practice.

"The chemistry and cohesion will continue to go and and I think they're doing a great job and coming together. There's been some rotation (with) some guys, it's competition there up front and I thought they've done a great job. Penei (Sewell) will be just fine at left (tackle) and he's excited about it."

Center Cade Mays is a newcomer Goff is attempting to build a quick report with, and seeing how rookie Blake Miller adjusts to right tackle will be a significant stumbling block. Providing those two are solid, the Lions have much better depth up front with Larry Borom, Juice Scruggs and Ben Bartch as reserves set to play a role if any untimely injuries arise.

Detroit's weaponry will remain elite, and their play calling figures to be improved. All that's left to see is if the big guys can protect better than they did last year. If that's the case, count on Goff being talked about as a potential MVP all season long.
