The Detroit Lions entered the offseason with several members of the 2023 draft class who are eligible for extensions. Linebacker Jack Campbell was the first one of the bunch to strike a new deal, and many believed that running back Jahmyr Gibbs was next up.

While that has been a talking point among fans, Gibbs expressed he's not worried about it and his focus is on the football field, per Eric Woodyard of ESPN.

"I'm worried about the team. I'm just tryna hoop right now."

He also added that he doesn't care if he or Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson gets paid first. Some players would hold out or take offense that they haven't received a new deal yet, but that isn't how Gibbs views things. And that shows how much of a stud on and off the field Gibbs is.

Jahmyr Gibbs isn't pressed for new deal from Lions

The Lions are in the midst of their OTAs, and Gibbs made it a priority to be present. Mandatory minicamp will run from June 16 to June 17 before training camp begins in July, so Gibbs being present is a great sign of his character. He's only worried about getting better and being there for his teammates/coaches.

And these comments will give the Lions yet another reason to pay him. It'll be a matter of when, not if, they extend him. The Alabama product is the clear-cut RB1 in this offense, especially after they shipped David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.

Gibbs is one of the fastest and most explosive players in the game with the ball in his hands. On the ground, he has 3,580 rushing yards (5.3 yards per carry) and 39 rushing touchdowns, logging 10-plus rushing scores in every campaign. As a receiver, he reeled in 181 passes (228 targets) with 1,449 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Lions look to get him 20-plus touches a game through carries and receptions. He's such an impact player, and he will get handled as such. This offseason alone, De'Von Achane (four years, $64 million) and Breece Hall (three years, $45.75 million) got extensions.

Gibbs is going to top both guys for sure on his deal. He and Robinson are both in different tiers and could command $20 million AAV on their extensions. What the exact number will be remains to be seen, but Gibbs is letting that take care of itself. He's focused on the 2026 season and getting better with his teammates. Having that mindset is huge and is another example of why Gibbs is a building block for the future in the Motor City.
