Detroit Lions draft: Is running back Akrum Wadley a perfect fit?
Of all the names tossed around the upcoming draft for the Detroit Lions, could Iowa’s Akrum Wadley actually be a perfect fit for the Motor City’s offense?
With the news that the Detroit Lions secured veteran running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal on Friday night, some fans might believe the position isn’t a pressing need in the Motor City anymore. They’d be wrong.
The Lions should absolutely pursue a running back in the first two days of the upcoming NFL draft regardless. That means using one of their picks in the first three rounds on a suitable prospect. And for months, we’ve toiled over the potential names.
Prospects like Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, LSU’s Derrius Guice, USC’s Ronald Jones III, San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny, Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson plus Georgia’s Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. But none of these backs seem to match the Lions’ passing offense as well as Iowa’s Akrum Wadley.

Lost in a sea of talented prospects, Wadley is the type of runner I believe the Lions’ would love to have in the backfield. Detroit needs a playmaker who is capable of gaining yardage regardless if the offensive line breaks down or not. And Wadley made of career doing just that at Iowa.
Displaying patience and the shiftiness that reminds me of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell, Wadley racked up 2,190 rushing yards and a total of 26 touchdowns during his final two years at Iowa. He averaged an incredible 6.4 yards per carry his junior season. Wadley is also an excellent receiver out of the backfield, abilities which he showed off at the Senior Bowl.
As with any running back in this class, there are things Wadley must work on to find success in the NFL. Namely, being more decisive and not dancing too long in the backfield. And he must also improve in pass protection. But Wadley’s unique ability to create yardage out of broken plays should have the Lions’ front office excited about his potential in Detroit.

The Detroit Lions will have plenty of running backs to choose from next month when the 2018 NFL Draft kicks off. But when it comes to finding the best player for their roster, Iowa’s Akrum Wadley could very well be the perfect fit.
