Mike Furrey Gone

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Breaking News, Lions | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

NFL News and Rumors with the scoop.

Mike was not happy with the way it went down, apparently this morning/afternoon Mayhew called him and informed him that although nothing has been officially done today, he was calling all the guys on the roster that were slated to be cut.
Mike had a strong start here in Detroit under the Mike Martz system of passing the ball 1,001 times in a football contest, but this year his numbers were way way wayyyyy down and he suffered a season ending concussion this season.
I like the guy, how can you not love a guy that [...]

Will LT End Up On the Market? Wake Up Detroit, There Will Never Be Another Barry Sanders.

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Lions | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

And if he does, ultimately what will happen?
Sports talk radio… er… the one station left that does that (for now) will become a foamy, frothy mess of callers chiming in with their “THE LIONS NEED TO GO OUT AND GET THIS GUY. GIVE UP WHATEVER IT TAKES AND PAY HIM WHATEVER HE WANTS” for hours and hours, morning to night.
The real question is, if this scenario plays out, SHOULD WE?
No.
Plain and simple, No. Ladainian Tomlinson is done. It was fun while it lasted, here’s a kiss goodnight, try not to die when your carriage turns back into a pumpkin.
You see [...]

With Scott Linehan Here to Complete The Coaching Staff, We Are Officially As Good As Any Expansion Team

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Draft, Lions, Millen | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

As I’m sure you know by now, the coaching set is complete as far as the main components are concerned have been acquired. There is a nice Free Press article on Coach Linehan by Carlos Monarrez:

When Scott Linehan was the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator, quarterback Daunte Culpepper passed for 4,717 yards, 39 touchdowns and had a 110.9 passer rating in 2004.
But in order for the Lions to have a future, coach Jim Schwartz said Friday, Linehan cannot tie himself to the past, or to Culpepper, as he takes over as the Lions’ offensive coordinator.
“I think part of the dynamic of a new [...]

Shall the Lions Draft a QB First Overall?

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Lions, Millen | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

We’ll just keep beating this to death then, shall we? Let’s consult history.
QB’s coming off of successful college seasons and entering the NFL Draft are like 7 footers in the NBA Draft :  If you take one and he’s a bust, you don’t know what you’re doing and if you don’t take him and he’s a stud, you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s a perfect Catch 22.

I’m reminded of the Green Bay Packers in 1989; Dallas takes the golden boy Troy Aikmen and Green Bay opts to take Tony Mandarich 2nd overall despite Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick [...]

Rod Marinelli Bounces Back In Chicago

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Lions, Millen | COMMENTS: None Yet

Rod Marinelli was interviewed briefly by the Chicago Tribune:
“Failing, that hurts,” said Marinelli, who went 10-38 in three seasons with the Lions. “We made mistakes. But I looked at so many positives. That’s just how I am, how I see everything.
“I could get up every day and I just wanted to make people better, make sure we were preparing correctly. When you do that, all the other factors, they didn’t hurt as much.”
The aspect Marinelli learned the most from his first NFL head-coaching gig was the importance of putting a cohesive staff together. He was unable to establish such coaching [...]

2 Things With Arizona Going To The Superbowl; Oh, and Mock Drafts. Lot’s of them.

AUTHOR: Kevin Ferguson | IN: Draft, Lions | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

1.) The Lions stand alone as the only original team to not make it to the big game.
2.) Kurt Warner will be wearing a tan jacket in a few years. 3 Super Bowls, 1 Ring ( and possibly 2), some serious statistics and done in what feels like 2 different eras over 10 years. The guy is a Hall of Fame quarterback, plain and simple; that’s that.
Congrats Cardinals. We were the only team drafting stupider a few years ago and yet with a new and vibrant coach, a few tweaks here and there and bam! You’re in the big game. [...]

1

Detroit Lions
(0-16)
Matt Stafford QB (Georgia) –
This will be met with a resounding *thud* as Lions Fans that know a thing or two about football will smack themselves on the forehand with the [face_palm] emotion. D’oh! We will scream “You’re supposed to take Andre Smith you morons!” and casual, typical Detroit fans will go to the team website and buy a “Stafford” Jersey.

2

St. Louis Rams
(2-14)
Andre Smith OT (Ala’bamy) -
Laughing hysterically, the Rams will wonder what the hell the Lions are doing, skip up the steps to the podium and do a cartwheel back to the table while the GM breaks open [...]
