Detroit Lions draft review, 3rd round: Do 3 picks equal 3 busts or 3 contributors?

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Draft, Lions | COMMENTS: None Yet

The 3rd round is where the Lions really need to make serious hay during the draft. Millen and Marinelli had 3 picks in a round where most teams expect to find contributors, if not starters. Sad to say, the Lions aren’t most teams.
That’s not to say the 3 picks will be busts, as all have NFL credentials. Hopefully the talent is there, but it’s not as if the Lions have mined gold in the draft’s 2nd day during the Millen era. They don’t get the benefit of the doubt from me, so I’ll have to actually see their picks produce [...]

Detroit Lions draft review, day one: Needs were filled, but where they filled with the right players?

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Lions | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

On day one of the 2008 NFL draft, the Lions filled needs. Glaring needs. Huge needs. Needs that could no longer be ignored. But they players they selected, Gosder Cherilus and Jordon Dizon, were both thought to be reaches by NFL draftniks.
The Lions believe they ended up with a pair of players who will be number one on the depth chart at their respective positions when the ‘08 season starts. I’m just not sure if it means the players the Lions drafted are that good, or the Lions are that bad.
1st round (17th overall) Boston College OT Gosder Cherilus:
Cherilus fills [...]

Live blogging the Lions, Tigers and Red Wings, oh my!

Join me live at 3PM! Let’s hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew…

FYI: Live blogging of the NFL draft, the Tigers, and the Red Wings to commence!

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Lions | COMMENTS: None Yet

As I’m officially an NFL blogger, I’ll be watching the draft intently. But I’m more than a one-trick pony.
There’s 2 other big time events in the D today, and both are nationally televised. The Tigers are taking on the Angels at 3:30, and more importantly, the Red Wings will be playing game 2 of their playoff series against the Nordalanche a little after 3PM. That’s also the same time the draft will start.
As I don’t have a life, and nothing better to do on a beautiful Saturday in SE Michigan…
I figure I’ll try to watch all 3 events, giving my [...]

New Lion Kalvin Pearson shows off his Marinelli approved “Football character” by strangling his girlfriend

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Breaking News, Lions | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

From a report in the St. Petersburg Times today:
Former Bucs safety Kalvin Pearson is in a Tampa jail after getting arrested on charges of domestic violence, including domestic battery by strangulation, according to Hillborough County jail records.
Pearson, 29, was booked this morning at 7:48 a.m. at Orient Road Jail, with two felony and one misdemeanor charges; aggravated battery of a pregnant female, domestic battery by strangulation, and obstructing or opposing an officer.
I know, I know… Pearson is innocent until proven guilty. Still, where there’s smoke, there’s an altercation between Pearson and his significant that ended in his being incarcerated with [...]

A full, 1-32, mock NFL draft? Not by this blogger (But here’s a mock anyway)

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Draft, Lions | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

I’m going to go off on a bit of a rant, so be prepared.
I’m sure you’ve been overwhelmed with NFL mock drafts. I know I have. Every day, what seems like another 100 or so mocks show up on various places the web, done by the local and national MSM, bloggers, forums, fans, Mel Kiper, anyone with an internet connection, and an opinion.
Which is why you won’t see this NFL blogger doing a mock draft, other than participating by drafting for the Lions. I follow the Lions closely, have a good idea as to their needs, and know what college [...]

Marinelli likes Mayo, and I’m not talking about condiments

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Draft, Lions | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Being T minus 2 days and counting till the NFL draft, it appears more and more that Jerod Mayo is the player the Lions are targeting with the 15th overall pick.

Jerod Mayo: Soon to be the Lions’ next condiment middle linebacker?
Mayo is not number one on the Lions’ draft board though, as that status belongs to Derick Harvey. Though he’s Marinelli’s dream player, much like anyone’s dream, odds are Harvey is unobtainable.
Simply put, Harvey is the dream pick, the best case scenario. Mayo is the likely pick, the player whom the Lions will settle for, and make the best of [...]

SideLion Report answers the Detroit Lions burning questions: Pre-draft edition

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Draft, Lions, Rumors | COMMENTS: None Yet

One of the most popular features at my other blog, The Wayne Fontes Experience, is “Burning questions.” Once a week, whenever the Hell I feel like it, or whenever the news warrants it, I answer questions about the latest hot button topics in regard to the Tigers and Lions.
As I did my first Detroit Tigers “burning questions” post yesterday, and the NFL Draft only 3 days away, it seemed like a good time to do my first Detroit Lions version at SLR.
So let’s light this candle, and answer some smoking hot questions!
Will the Lions trade WR Roy Williams during the [...]

I’m no longer “The new guy!” Fan Sided introduces 2 new NFL blogs!

AUTHOR: Zach | IN: Lions | COMMENTS: None Yet

I’d like to welcome 2 new blogs to the rapidly growing Fan-Sided Blogs universe.
“Blogging Dirty“ will cover all things Atlanta Falcons. (Tripp, you have my sympathies in having to write about Joey Blue Skies…)

There’s also a new Fan Sided blog covering the New Orleans Saints, “Who Dat Dish.” (The Saints are no longer the ‘Anits, so Dashmir gets no sympathy from this blogger of a bottom feeding team…)

Head over to “Blogging Dirty” and “Who Dat Dish” to say hey, and get their thoughts in regard to this weekends draft.
