The Jahmyr Gibbs 2025 fantasy roller coaster bottomed out at the worst time

In 2024, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs fully emerged as a fantasy football stud and his run from Week 15-17 made him a certified "league winner". Early looks toward 2025 put him in the upper echelon regardless of position, and he went top-five in any redraft league when draft season arrived.

As expected, as the snap share and workload in the Lions' backfield notably shifted toward him over David Montgomery, Gibbs finished as a top-five fantasy running back this year regardless of scoring format.

Gibbs carried his fantasy managers to wins in multiple weeks this year, with four games where he topped 36 points in full PPR and four other games where he topped 19 full PPR points.

But there was an occassional dud, typically lined up with games the Lions lost. But even in some games where his rushing production fell flat, Gibbs was able to keep his fantasy output afloat with production as a pass catcher.

Still, looking at 0.5 PPR scoring but applying across the board, it was a roller coaster with Gibbs during the regular season in fantasy leagues (though Week 14).

Week 1: RB25
Week 2: RB9
Week 3: RB3
Week 4: RB15
Week 5: RB12
Week 6: RB27
Week 7: RB2
Week 8: Bye
Week 9: RB40
Week 10: RB3
Week 11: RB12
Week 12: RB1
Week 13: RB27
Week 14: RB1

From Week 1-Week 14, Gibbs was the RB3 in full and 0.5-point PPR and the RB2 in standard scoring. A huge chunk of his fantasy managers not only made the playoffs, but a portion of them ended up with a first-round bye in the fantasy playoffs.

In Week 15, Gibbs didn't hurt his fantasy managers who earned a first-round playoff by with a finish as RB33 in 0.5-point PPR (RB30 in full PPR). His managers who didn't have that bye might have been one-and-done in the playoffs.

Then came Week 16, when, spurred solely by what he did as a pass catcher (10 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown), Gibbs finished as a top-15 fantasy running back in half and full PPR (RB19 in standard scoring).

In Week 17 Gibbs put a late lump of coal in the Christmas stockings of his fantasy managers. with 63 total yards and a lost fumble against the Minnesota Vikings on his way to a finish outside the top-30 running backs for the week no matter the scoring format.

After that ill-timed finishing stretch, Yahoo! put a fine point on Gibbs' fantasy failures when it matter the most to his managers.

Some of Gibbs' fantasy managers were able to navigate his late downturn and still finish well in their leagues. But some of those who he failed in the fantasy playoffs will surely carry that derision into their 2026 drafts, and make the mistake of passing on him altogether in the first round based sheerly on that sentiment.
