If/when the Detroit Lions every play a game in Germany, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown would be at home. His mother is German, and he's fluent in the language. He has thus become of of the most popular NFL players in that country, as team president Rod Wood noted in a conversation with Tim Twentyman of Lions.com earlier this spring after the league gave the Lions marketing rights in Germany.
"Germany, it's a big market. We're gonna be playing NFL games there. St. Brown is one of the most, if not the most, popular football players in Germany," Wood said. "It seemed like a natural (fit), and so we're ready to take that leap now."
On a recent episode of "Stacking The Box" with Sterling Holmes, with a nod to St. Brown speaking German, quarterback Jared Goff was asked about learning the language in an effort to confuse defenses.
"Yeah, that's actually a good point. I probably should. I haven't thought about that. But it would be nice to figure out some route names in German. I could just yell 'em to him, and we wouldn't have to come up with all these fancy signals, you know."
Amon-Ra St. Brown is on-board with calling plays in German
St. Brown made his own appearance with Holmes on "Stacking The Box" before the draft in Detroit. Holmes brought up his conversation with Goff about learning German so plays can be called in the language.
"He actually text me. This is probably after you talked to him, he text me like a week ago, and said, you know, we should have some plays in German, or some calls in German, so when we're out there we can just audible and switch it and no one's gonna know what it is..."
St. Brown went a little further to say he and Goff texted back and forth about stuff in the Lions' playbook that could be translated to German.
To be clear, there's no way Goff and St. Brown will do audibles in German during a game. But it is a fun idea, and both were on-board when asked about it.
