There's a saying that goes, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Detroit Lions cornerback Emmanuel Moseley suffered a torn pectoral during Monday's practice against the Giants and is out indefinitely.
This makes three straight seasons where Moseley has suffered a major injury. Playing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. The Lions took a one-year flier on him in 2023 free agency, and after some setbacks in his recovery he made his team debut in Week 5 last season. Almost a year to the day from his first torn ACL, he tore his other ACL (right knee) two snaps in.
The Lions re-signed Moseley to a one-year deal this offseason, and he had been competing for the starting nickel corner role in training camp. During Monday's practice, he was the first to see snaps at nickel corner with the first-team defense. There were no clear indications he was injured, as indicated by Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network, just the easy expectation that others (Amik Robertson, Ennis Rakestraw) were getting some run at the nickel spot with the first-team too.
Detroit Lions injury report: How long will Emmanuel Moseley be out?
"Out indefinitely" is naturally vague, but Moseley will be out quite a while. However, there is a frame of reference directly related to the Lions. C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered a torn pectoral in Week 2 last season. He returned to practice in December, then played in Week 18 and all three playoff games.
If they wait to place him on IR until final roster cuts, the Lions would keep the door open for Moseley to return late this season, like they'll probably do with defensive lineman John Cominsky, who suffered a torn MCL in his right knee last week.
If the Lions place Moseley on IR immediately, he would be out for the season.
Update, 9:50 a.m.: Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Moseley is out indefinitely, with a chance to return late in the season.
