Lions-Brandon Aiyuk trade narrative just can't be let go of for some reason
The situation between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers remains unresolved, as teams bowed out and re-entered the conversation to trade for him over the course of this week. The "hold-in" he's doing is working though, based on the fact 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is irritated by it.
The idea of the Detroit Lions trading for Aiyuk has surfaced as easily as it can be debunked. The outline for why it wouldn't be done is simple.
-The Lions just paid Amon-Ra St. Brown a top of the wide receiver market contract, and Aiyuk wants something similar (if not more than St. Brown, per year).
-The Lions are unlikely to give up the draft capital and/or players the 49ers want in an Aiyuk trade.
-Based on fresh reporting from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, it also seems unlikely the Lions would have an Aiyuk deal facilitated by any three-team trade scenario.
-Why would the 49ers trade Aiyuk to one of the teams that's already best-positioned to unseat them as NFC champs this year?
It just doesn't make sense, as anything other than an all-in, "bleep it" trade for the Lions on the premise they still have a lot of cap space for this year. And that leaves out the 49ers being willing to send Aiyuk to the team they trailed by 17 at halftime of last year's NFC Championship Game.
Analyst just can't let go of idea the Lions should go get Brandon Aiyuk
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports took Aiyuk's situation toward the angle of there being unnamed suitors out there for him-"mystery teams", if you will. While that's not a ridiculous idea, including the Lions on said list of three mystery teams is a big reach based on what we know or can confidently assume.
"The Lions just made Amon-Ra St. Brown one of the game's highest-paid receivers, so you'd think they might be hesitant to dedicate another big chunk of money to a second wideout. Look no further than the Philadelphia Eagles, who extended both A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith with lucrative deals this offseason. Currently boasting the third-most salary cap space of any team (almost $43 million), the Lions also have a sneaky need for more receiver depth, which would take pressure off youngster Jameson Williams. This team is after a Super Bowl, so it wouldn't be crazy to see them aim for another splash."
-Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports
There's no denying the Lions have question marks after their top three wide receivers right now. The idea of an addition to take some pressure off Jameson Williams isn't even that outlandish.
But this is specifically about Aiyuk. Him being traded to the Lions doesn't make sense, and never will, for a number of reasons. But that logic is being conveniently set aside, or outright ignored, in the name of pure speculation.
