5 New York Giants players the Detroit Lions should be scouting this week

Dan Campbell stated something obvious before the first joint practice against the Giants, and the Lions should have eyes on these five opposing players as the week against them winds down.

2. CB Tre Herndon

Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports was on Herndon as a potential fit for the Lions back in free agency, before all the moves were made to remodel the cornerback depth chart. And with a tie to new Lions' defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend from the past two seasons in Jacksonville, the fit can still be made to make some sense now.

Herndon is well down the cornerback depth chart for the Giants. Sheer experience (83 games and 34 career starts) would give him some appeal to other teams, but his likeliest path to sticking with the Lions might be more as a practice squad guy than a lock to be on the active roster every week. That's where the relationship with Townsend could tip scales for the Lions, if he lacks other good options.

Cornerback is not a big need for the Lions, obviously (at least to most people). But there's something to the idea you can never have enough viable options at the position, and Herndon posted by far the best PFF grade of his career (70.8) last year.

1. WR Darius Slayton

Slayton's future as a Giant has felt tenuous all offseason. He stayed away from voluntary offseason work, and got a little adjustment to the final year of his contract as a result. The idea of him as a possible trade target for the Lions has been easy to offer, and Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network had this proposal for a training camp trade.

Lions get: WR Darius Slayton
Giants get: 2025 sixth-round pick

Dan Duggan of The Athletic wasn't quite ready to write Slayton's obituary with the Giants as the start of the preseason beckons, but he did acknowledge how it looks like Jalin Hyatt will get "every opportunity" to be the Giants' No. 3 wide receiver.

Slayton has largely overcome the ineptitude of the Giants' offense during his career, topping 720 yards and averaging at least 15 yards a catch in four of five seasons. Last season, he accounted for a quarter of the team's touchdown receptions (four). Imagine what he could do with a solid role in a good offense.....if the Lions don't have some level of eyes on him before they leave New York/New Jersey, they are doing it wrong.
