Somewhere on the offseason agenda for the Detroit Lions are contract extensions for quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Both are entering the final year of their current contracts. Reports during the NFL Combine suggested talks between the Lions and St. Brown in particular were ramping up,
Multiple reports have pointed to a deal worth $25-$28 million per year that would make St. Brown one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.
No news could be construed as bad news regarding contract negotiations with Goff. There's a possibility that a recent big contract a less-accomplished quarterback got has thrown a wrench into things. For his part, Goff has made it clear he wants to remain in Detroit long-term. All indications are the feeling is mutual, it's just a matter of getting a deal done.
Contract extension projections for Goff have landed in the four-year, $180 million range. But Charles Robinson of Yahoo!, in the wake of the deal Kirk Cousins got from the Falcons, suggested $50 million per year would not be an unreasonable ask.
"Cousins’ deal with the Falcons is going to weigh on the Goff extension talks. Not only is Goff younger (29), he has achieved considerably more in the postseason than Cousins. And what once looked like it could be a $50 million per year price tag for the Lions quarterback is now essentially assured of it."
Dan Campbell makes it clear contract extensions for Goff and St. Brown are a top priority
Speaking at the owners meetings on Tuesday morning, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Lions head coach Dan Campbell reinforced the priority attached to contract extensions for Goff and St. Brown before the 2024 season starts.
"Yeah, those are priorities," Campbell said Tuesday at the NFL's annual meeting. "Those are certainly priorities. I’m not going to get into those, but certainly there’s conversations that are being had.”
It's easy to get uneasy about there not being a new deal for Goff or St. Brown right now. But the draft is a month away, and after that something seems likely to get done on both fronts.
