Back in April, the Detroit Lions revealed the return of their black alternate uniforms. The last time they were worn was in 2007, when head coach Dan Campbell played for the Lions. Why the ever went away is a question, but Campbell wanted them back when he became head coach in 2021. Team president Rod Wood said a division title might bring them back. Then Campbell delivered on his end of that deal last season.
The best part of the reveal of the new black alternate uniform was the doing away with (hopefully for good) of the Lions' ugly, pajama-like all-gray alternates.
The question then became when the black uniforms would debut during the season, though the first primetime game on the then yet-to-be-revealed schedule made plenty of sense and made for an easy guess.
Now, we have that answer.
On the Detroit Football Network podcast after the Lions' Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Justin Rogers first broke the news after presumably being given some clearance to do so.
"I will break some news and confirm that the black jerseys are coming out next week for their debut," Rogers said. "Been sitting on that for a week. I also know the second game they’re wearing them, so come back for that. That might be a little story next week."
So the Lions will indeed debut their black uniforms next Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks on "Monday Night Football." Rogers added that he knows when the second game the Lions will wear them is.
Detroit Lions to debut black uniforms on Monday night stage
As a follow up to that, the Lions social media team teased the black uniforms being worn against the Seahawks. The team's entire Twitter profile, cover photo and all, seems to reveal it, for that matter. That is just shy of an official confirmation, which is yet to come, but it practically functions as such.
The blue helmet with the black Lions' logo really completes the head-to-toe black uniform. In any case, by all indications the world will see them next Monday night.
