Detroit Lions injury updates: DJ Reader, Emmanuel Moseley, who practiced Sunday?
Detroit Lions Dan Campbell met with reporters on Monday morning, and he immediately made it clear he was not going to get into anything regarding potential moves ahead of Tuesday's deadline to be down to 53 players.
However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported a couple expected procedural moves as the Lions get down to 53 players on the active roster heading into the season. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is going on IR, as expected after he suffered a torn pectoral during joint practices with the New York Giants.
Moseley will be eligible to return this season, per new NFL rules that allow two players to be put on IR before roster cuts and deemed eligible to return. The Lions haven't announced the placement of Moseley on IR, and he is out indefinitely.
Rookie guard Christian Mahogany missed all of training camp with an undisclosed illness, and he has only recently been back in the building. He will stay on the NFI (non-football injury) list, and miss at least the first four games of the season.
Mahogany will not be able to practice until at least Week 5, which happens to be the Lions' bye week. When/if he is able to practice, that will start a 21-day window to add him to the active roster. If he's not put on the active roster in that window, he'd miss the entire season.
Detroit Lions injury updates: Players returning to practice
Campbell did have updates on who returned to practice during Sunday's walkthrough session. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs, defensive tackle DJ Reader, tight end Sam LaPorta, cornerback Terrion Arnold, guard Kevin Zeitler, cornerback Carlton Davis and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez were all back to work.
Campbell also had a further update on Reader, who was taken off the PUP list on Sunday. He spent all of camp there as he works his way back from a torn quad tendon, but he passed a physical and came off the list. Campbell said the goal all along with Reader has been to play in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Week 1 has not been ruled out.
"I would love to say we’re targeting that (Week 1). We’re just going to take it as it comes,” Campbell said, about Reader. “We’d always said, long term, that we were kinda shooting for (Week 2 vs.) Tampa [Bay]. Look, our eyes are open, and we’re going to pay close attention and see how he does, how he feels, and kinda go from there if it’s sooner.”
Last week, Campbell said he expected a big chunk of injured players to be back after the preseason finale. That came to fruition, as preparation now shifts toward a game that counts in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.
