Even as good as he is, it's no secret that Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff doesn't get all the credit he deserves.
In Week 4 Goff had a near perfect game (at least in term of passer rating, yet he was hilariously snubbed for a game ball by Dan Campbell. Campbell would later make that right, but the oversight was indicative of how overlooked Goff is at times.
On Wednesday's edition of "The Herd", Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports proved just how much Goff flies under the radar. Via a game of "Blind Resume", Goff's stats since the start of the 2023 season were compared to some notable quarterbacks around the league.
Colin Cowherd again heaps praise on Jared Goff
Back in May, considering everything, Cowherd drew some attention when he said he would take Goff over some notable quarterbacks, including Joe Burrow. So this new praise isn't out of nowhere, with no history to back it.
In order, Goff's recent resume is compared to the recent resumes of Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, using wins, completion rate, total touchdowns, etc. Each one of that trio has a different level of upside than Goff, but Cowherd wanted to put respect on what the Lions' signal caller is doing.
"I don't think he is Lamar (Jackson), Josh (Allen) or (Patrick) Mahomes. I don't think he can bring to the table athletically stuff I like. I think when you get into the postseason and you face the best defenses and defensive coordinators, off-script stuff in the second-half becomes really, really valuable. You have to make plays with your feet. You start looking at a bunch of numbers with Jared Goff, 18-18 in an NFL game. He is tied for first last 20 games in wins, he is first in total passing yards and he is second in big pass plays. That is with a No. 2 receiver and a tight end that get banged up. 'Well he's got a good offensive line.' Folks, give me a break. Those are passing numbers...:"
Cowherd then delivered a punch line.
"He is the most underrated player in the league, and there's nothing close. It's Goff, a huge gap, and then you can name your guy."
Cowherd's comparisons are certainly eye-opening. The stats presented say Goff could quietly be the top quarterback in the league right now, even if he is consistently underrated. But that Goff is underrated based on how he's performed lately is not news to Lions' fans.
