The Detroit Lions have a new two-headed monster in their backfield--David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. For one, Hall of Famer Barry Sanders is already impressed with what he's seen.

Sanders, a top-five rusher in NFL history, of course knows something of which he speaks when it comes to talent at the running back position.

Speaking at Lions' training camp, on NFL Network's "Inside Training Camp Live" with Andrew Sicliano and Brian Baldinger earlier this week, Sanders was asked about what he sees from Gibbs in particular. The Hall of Famer couldn't hide his excitement.

"They couldn't be more geeked about Jahmyr Gibbs and being able to get him early in the first-round. What they've seen so far, his attitude and his approach to practice. When you get a young running back in camp and you see him in real live action with other players, seeing whether that speed transfers. Whether he still has that zip he had in college. So far, we see that. He's a guy that's going to be able to make plays."

Barry Sanders sees big potential in Lions running back tandem

Gibbs has wowed so far in camp, and with his abilities out of the backfield combined with Montgomery's work between the tackles, Sanders sees the opportunity for some impressive production for the duo.

"You know they want to be balanced, and the guys they have in the room, that's what they are there for. They're there to make plays in the passing game and the running game. Being in this division, we've seen what David Montgomery can do game in and game out. He's a 1,000 yard rusher every year pretty much. We're looking hopefully for the same production. "

The Lions offense was very good last season. The new and upgraded backfield duo, with Gibbs impressing no less an authority than Sanders now, is in line to raise the ceiling of the offense this year.
