3 free agents the Detroit Lions were wise to avoid in 2024

As the dust settles on the substantial part of free agency, the Detroit Lions look wise to not have signed these three guys.

The Detroit Lions approach to free agency has been made clear by general manager Brad Holmes. Frankly, he flat out said "everyone can't play here." Evaluating potential fits based on need, skill set and talent is inherent as a pre-requisite. The Lions want players who fit their culture, in parallel to how they'll bolster the depth chart at a position.

It's fair to say they've done that, as March winds down and the dust settles on the most notable part of free agency. Every outside move, with a notable trade, brought in someone to not only address a need but also seemingly bring the intangible qualities the Lions want. In regard to guard Kevin Zeitler, look no further than the resurfaced clip showing him doing pass blocking sets while his wife was in labor a couple years ago.

It might have been nice to see the Lions make a splashy move to add a top-end cornerback or edge rusher in free agency. But it was always fairly unlikely, as the overall price point was sure to be too high (ex: L'Jarius Sneed).

Often, teams who spend the most in March aren't accomplishing high-level things during the subsequent season(s). What the Lions are doing is clearly working well (draft, develop, reward your own first, etc.), so there's no need for drastic change to the plan.

On that front, the Lions look particularly wise to have avoided signing these three free agents this year.
