NFL writer's proposed Jared Goff trade packages are perfectly absurd

Jared Goff isn't going anywhere, but 'tis the season.

The Detroit Lions probably aren't going to be rocking the boat in any significant way this offseason. They do have the draft capital and quality pieces to make some noise on the trade market, but it just doesn't feel like they have the urgency to blow any portion of their roster up for a game-changing player.

It's still fun to speculate! With a potentially boring next few weeks ahead of us prior to the 2026 NFL Draft, we're going to see some pretty wild trade proposals made involving the Lions, especially if there are trades that can land them some help next to Aidan Hutchinson.

In one of these wacky proposals, Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon proposed three trade packages that would ship some highly-coveted draft capital to Detroit in exchange for...Jared Goff.

Wild Jared Goff trade proposals would majorly rock the boat

Firstly, Gagnon wrote that the only reason why Goff would ever be on the hot seat any time soon is because of his playoff performance metrics:

"The 31-year-old Goff is statistically elite, but he has a career playoff passer rating of 85.1 and the extremely talented Lions have won just two playoff games the last three years. They also seem to be headed in the wrong direction following a non-playoff 2025 campaign."

Gagnon proposes that this fact, coupled with the potential of regression for Goff overall, could push Detroit into this extremely unlikely, uncharted territory with their franchise quarterback. Three teams of interest to consider, per Gagnon, would be the New York Jets, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

These are three teams desparate for consistent quarterback play which, as far as we know, is what Goff will be able to offer for at least the next several seasons. The Jets, which Gagnon mocks as a team sending their 2nd overall pick in exchange for Goff, would reunite Aaron Glenn with Goff and continue what's beginning to feel like an exchange program between New York and Detroit.

Las Vegas would be punting their shot at Fernando Mendoza in this scenario, sending their top pick to Detroit for Goff. The Lions would take Mendoza at number one overall, hoping to develop the rookie into a longer-term franchise signal caller than what they currently have with Goff. And, Pittsburgh would send two picks in this mock-up, landing them the perfect QB to replace the unreliable Aaron Rodgers.

Detroit, again, would never do this. Goff is one of the shining spots for this franchise, and their confidence in him was clear once they shipped out Matthew Stafford for him back in 2021.

Goff deserves several more chances to bring a Super Bowl to Detroit for the first time, and there's no world where Campbell or Holmes would be happy with effectively starting over again for the mystery-box chance of a rookie phenom.
