The Detroit Lions need to fix a defense which was miserable down the stretch, and finding depth at every position will be a significant key this offseason. Though there are spots where the Lions may look strong on paper, nothing should be off the table with regard to improvements.
Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus took a look at possible landing spots for the top free agent linebackers, naming the Lions as a spot for Dre Greenlaw of the San Francisco 49ers.
"Greenlaw spent much of this past season getting right after his Achilles injury during the 49ers' run to the Super Bowl in 2023, which may leave some front offices hesitant to offer despite a need."
"The Lions, however, are projected to hold the 10th-most cap space this offseason and could make a play for Greenlaw based on his high-ceiling potential heading into his age-28 season. With Alex Anzalone’s contract set to expire after this season, Greenlaw could come in on a “prove it” deal to play a supplemental role in Detroit while he attempts to regain his form post-injury."
Greenlaw only played two games this season as he worked his way back from that Achilles injury, and calf injury landed him on IR at the end of the season, So he may be viewed as damaged goods on the free agency market, and the Lions could swoop in and find a good value if the medicals check out.
Dre Greenlaw stands out as quality value for Lions in free agency
Under Brad Holmes, the Lions haven't been prolific free agency spenders. That has been smart, as they have not been bogged down with bad long-term deals that have hampered their ability to stay financially flexible. That frugality could now allow them to pursue a bigger move.
Many of Detroit's signings have been players coming off injury or cast aways looking to bet on themselves. Players like Charles Harris, Kalif Raymond, Alex Anzalone and David Montgomery have stood out as fantastic additions by Holmes in recent years. Greenlaw could be in that mold.
Many might forget that Greenlaw was a PFWA All-Rookie in 2019. In his career, he's been a tackling machine, piling up 455 tackles and 3.5 sacks along with three interceptions and 14 passes defended. If he is healthy, he could could help patch some holes behind Detroit's defensive line.
