While the focus is currently on the preseason with two games remaining against the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts, the Detroit Lions' season opener against the New Orleans Saints at Ford Field on Sept. 13 is just around the corner.

The Saints are coming off a strong end to the 2025 season, winning four out of their last five games to finish at 7-10. Despite this, the Lions should be able to take care of business and earn a win to open the season at Ford Field.

According to recent injury updates on the Saints' roster, a Lions win to open the season is looking more likely. Two key Saints players are expected to miss the start of the season: running back Alvin Kamara, who suffered an MCL injury, and 2026 No. 8 overall pick Jordyn Tyson, who could miss two months with a hamstring injury.

Alvin Kamara and Jordyn Tyson likely to miss season opener

Entering this season, these two players were expected to be among the notable stars on the Saints' offense and play a major role in helping New Orleans chase an NFC South division title. Kamara, who has struggled with injuries, has been the heart and soul of the Saints' rushing attack, recording 7,250 yards and 61 touchdowns throughout his NFL career.

Hopes were high for No. 8 overall pick Tyson entering his rookie season, as he enters the league fresh off being one of the best wide receivers in college football with the Arizona State Sun Devils. During his collegiate career, which started at Colorado Buffaloes, Tyson recorded 2,282 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Taking away these two players gives the Lions defense, which will likely be without Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch for the season opener, less to worry about for their New Orleans prep. Despite these losses for the Saints on offense, the Lions defense still has to perform as a win to open the season against a still-rebuilding New Orleans squad is crucial to set the tone for the year, especially with their Week 2 Thursday night showdown against the Buffalo Bills looming after.

The kickoff between the Lions and Saints at Ford Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 13, with the game broadcast on FOX. The Lions have won two out of their last three games to open the NFL season. The Lions hope to open the season with a win after falling to the Green Bay Packers 27-13 at Lambeau Field in Week 1 last season.
