In one of the biggest no-brainer signings for the Detroit Lions this offseason, the team announced that Avonte Maddox had been re-signed to a new deal. The versatile defensive back had been a great depth piece for the Lions in 2025, and his return helps add back optionality to DC Kelvin Sheppard's roster for 2026.

Maddox, who will be 30 at the start of the Lions' new year, provided meaningful snaps down the stretch of games last season due to numerous injuries to the defensive back room. After losing Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, and Terrion Arnold, Maddox was looked to for veteran help by Sheppard. He ended up posting one forced fumble, one interception, four passes defended, and 23 total tackles.

The veteran took a while to return to the squad, but it's nice to see the Lions take an easy "W" with this re-signing. He's likely to be a leader in the locker room for 2026, especially as the team will be without Branch to begin the year. He can easily start in his place next to Joseph, assuming he's also healthy to begin the year.

Lions re-sign Maddox ahead of 2026 season

The Lions have placed an emphasis on signing depth in their secondary. Detroit has so far signed Maddox, Chuck Clark, Christian Izien, Roger McCreary, and Rock Ya-Sin to the roster, mostly on small deals. General manager Brad Holmes has expounded on the teams' desire to remain deep, but financially sound, for 2026 and 2027. Thankfully, Maddox clearly fit into that mold.

Maddox is also an excellent re-signing after the Lions lost Amik Robertson in free agency to the Washington Commanders. Another DB who provided impactful backup minutes for the Lions in 2026, Robertson's departure left a big hole on Detroit's roster.

Now, it's looking like the Lions have re-shaped their defensive back room thanks to this Maddox re-signing and the rest of their smaller, under-the-radar additions.
