The Detroit Lions are in a unique position. On one hand, they boast arguably the NFL's best young nucleus; on the other, it feels like their Super Bowl window is closing.

Perhaps no one personifies the Lions' organizational crossroad more than their quarterback, Jared Goff. The five-time Pro Bowler turns 32 in October but has shown no signs of slowing down and is signed through 2028. However, he and the club have gone backwards since reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2023, and the internal clock is ticking.

Goff discussed the Lions' sense of urgency heading into a potential make-or-break 2026 during their first organized team activity (OTA) open to the media.

"I think we are hungry," Goff told reporters (h/t Eric Woodyard of ESPN). "We were a fourth-place team last year, and we need to come out and play a lot better this year."

Despite posting a 9-8 record in 2025, Detroit finished last in the NFC North standings because it lost a tiebreaker to the Minnesota Vikings. That clearly isn't sitting well with Goff and Co., who lost seven out of 12 games and fell out of contention.

There's no margin for error following a collapse like that. As we often hear, the NFL is a results-driven business, and the Goff-led Lions have had immense regular-season success, ranking fourth in wins since 2022. Nevertheless, they're ultimately judged by their success (or lack thereof) in January — and hopefully February too.

Alas, Detroit has just two playoff victories to show for its remarkable turnaround with Goff and beloved head coach Dan Campbell at the helm. One way or another, something must give, and the locker room seems to be well aware of what's at stake.

It's now or never for the current iteration of the Lions, and Goff understands the magnitude of the moment. They will only get so many more bites at the apple before the franchise is left with no choice other than to shift gears. How the group fares in the upcoming campaign could have a massive impact on the franchise's long-term outlook.

Everyone is under evaluation if Detroit disappoints again, including Goff. There's a potential out of his contract after 2027, leaving the door open for a reset if their core has run its course.

Statistically, Goff remained highly effective last season. He completed 68 percent of his throws for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions en route to posting football's third-highest passer rating (105.5).
