It's always fun to check in on where former Detroit Lions players, especially those who helped contribute to the Barry Sanders glory days in the 1990s, find themselves. Former Lions quarterback Rodney Peete popped up in a very unlikely situation, as he was a spectator in MLB's season-opening series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, Japan.
Peete was able to snatch a foul ball away from Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy in the middle of the game. Muncy was clearly irritated with Peete, as he believed he had a chance to snag the ball in foul ground and record an out. Instead, Peete ended up with a very nice souvenir.
Luckily for Muncy and Peete's Dodgers, as the ex-Lions signal-caller was sporting a fresh Dodgers hoodie, Los Angeles was able to pull out the win and sweep the two-game series. Holly Robinson-Peete's husband has resurfaced in the most unlikely of places.
The fact that Peete bought a general admission ticket to this game and brought his glove only adds to the unusual nature of this whole interaction. Taking a catch away from Muncy was what really put the icing on the cake.
Former Lions QB Rodney Peete catches fly ball at Cubs-Dodgers
A former sixth-round pick of the Lions, Peete started 47 games across five seasons and helped the Lions make the playoffs multiple times. Peete, who played 15 years in the NFL with teams like the Eagles, Panthers, and Cowboys, threw 38 touchdowns and 49 interceptions in his time with the Lions.
Peete, who lettered in baseball in high school, was drafted in the 30th round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, but chose to go to USC instead.
With the Trojans, he hit .297 with 18 home runs and 64 RBI while being named All-Pac-12 as a third baseman. The Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 14th and 13th rounds of the 1988 and 1989 MLB Drafts, while the Detroit Tigers took him in the 28th round in 1990.
Muncy may have been upset at Peete taking this catch away, but he shouldn't have put his glove under Peete's while trying to make a play. The same guy who threw 76 NFL touchdowns after defying the odds as a sixth-round pick was not going to be very humble about this catch, as he was boasting about his smooth fielding skills on social media.
