David Montgomery injury update is as good as it gets after brief scare

The Lions had a very brief injury scare on Sunday, but it looks like running back David Montgomery avoided a major injury.

The Detroit Lions got off to a slow start on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Then running back David Montgomery remained down on the field after being stopped short on a 3rd-and-1 run. He got off the field with help, while putting very little weight on his left leg.

Montgomery went into the blue medical tent, as is automatic in a situation like his, but he never left the sideline and was pretty quickly spotted riding an exercise bike when he came out of the tent. He had an unfortunate fumble late in the game, and the Lions leaned on Jahmyr Gibbs more in the wake of his injury. Gibbs was also running well, so it was a game that may have just turned out to be his day to shine.

That Montgomery was able to come back in the game immediately pointed to the idea his knee injury was not too serious. But the day after a game can be more revealing regarding injuries, so there was a bit of natural concern about his status until an update came on Monday.

Dan Campbell gives good injury update on David Montgomery

Montgomery's injury and prognosis was an automatic topic for head coach Dan Campbell to address during his press conference on Monday.

"He’s good,” Campbell said. "Obviously, he had pain. And he knows it’s in that area around the knee. And it’s kind of in the back. So you’re trying to figure it out and it’s painful. And once we got him off, tested it, looked at it, he started feeling better. But he got kneed in the back of the knee. So, just kind of the meaty part. So it was more like a bruise or contusion, which is great. He bounced back. He’ll be good. Nothing should come from this. We’re thankful for that. I know he is, too.”

So it's now confirmed Montgomery avoided a major injury. It's fair to assume he'll be limited in practice for a day or two this week heading into Week 8 against the Tennessee Titans, but there is no doubt he'll be able to play at this point.
