The Detroit Lions aren't off to a great start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, with a failed fake punt, a litany of penalties by replacement starting right guard Kayode Awosika and not getting their first first down of the game until the waning seconds of the first quarter.

Then, an injury was added that insult, as running back David Montgomery suffered an injury after being stuffed on a 3rd-and-1 run. He left the game with help getting off the field, while not putting much weight on his left leg.

It certainly could be worse and it's not certain he'll be able to return, but the Lions quickly declared Montgomery questionable to return to Sunday's game.

The FOX broadcast eventually showed it, but reporters on site at U.S. Bank Stadium showed Montgomery riding an exercise bike under the watchful eye of trainers on the Lions' sideline after spending a little time in the blue medial tent.

Jahmyr Gibbs will serve as the clear lead back for the Lions for however long Montgomery's absence lasts on Sunday. Nothing shifts momentum like explosive plays, and when it was sorely needed Gibbs offered one like he can.

Montgomery not going to the locker room after his injury was an immediate good sign. Being declared questionable to return rather than out was more good news, along with being seen doing anything on the sideline in the hope he can return to action.

Through five games this season, Montgomery has 351 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, while averaging a career-high 4.7 yards per carry. If he is unable to return or is not able to play in his typical capacity for the rest of Sunday, Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki are also in uniform at running back for the Lions.

Update: Montgomery has returned to the game.
