If Ben Johnson leaves the Detroit Lions for a head coaching job, he's a practical lock to go to the Las Vegas Raiders. Unless he's not, and the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and maybe even the Dallas Cowboys are in play.
When it comes down to it, no one really knows what will happen with Johnson. The timing of when the Lions' season ends stands to play some role in things. The Raiders, to their credit, have done everything they needed to do to appeal to him with it clearly out there he wants "alignment" with the front office.
The Bears and Jaguars have the advantage of having a quarterback in place to build around, and the effort to get the best out of that quarterback makes Johnson a top candidate for both of those jobs.
What's most clear is if Johnson wants a head coaching job in this hiring cycle, he will have one. The question about if he wants one, now or ever, lingers despite his openly saying he wants to be a head coach someday.
NFL analyst thinks Ben Johnson will choose one of two options
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio was on "The Dan Patrick Show" Friday, talking about the coaching carousel. The conversation turned to Johnson, and Florio expanded on some previous thoughts he has had.
"Not every guy wants to be the guy at the front of the room", Florio said. "I've heard Ben Johnson relishes his role as mad scientist coming up with all these trick plays, running the offense and not dealing with the pressure of being the head coach.”
Florio mentioned "alignment" as the key thing associated with Johnson. There's only one team that can clearly offer that right now, with a new general manager also coming.
Patrick dove into the idea of coordinators realizing they aren't head coach material, or they just don't want to be a head coach. Florio responded with the idea that some think they have to jump through their window to become a head coach immediately, lest it be closed a year later.
Florio also noted how Johnson's situation with the Lions keeps that window open for him, so he doesn't have to jump at whatever opportunity comes along.
Florio eventually got down to what he thinks will happen with Johnson.
"I think it's the Raiders or Lions, take that Raiders job or stay put for Ben Johnson,” Florio said.
