The 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics is about to get underway in Italy, but Detroit Lions' star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is already looking ahead to the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
As he preps to play flag football as a part of the 2026 Pro Bowl Games, St. Brown expressed interest in playing the same sport during the 2028 Olympics. There's a catch -- it likely won't be for Team USA.
St. Brown spoke to the Detroit Free Press on Monday, saying, “I think it’d be Team Germany."
St. Brown has dual American and German citizenship, thanks to his German mother, Miriam. St. Brown, who is fluent in German, has become one of the NFL's biggest German ambassadors, as he travels to Germany every year to host a youth football camp.
Although curiously, the Lions have yet to play a game in Germany. That could change in the 2026 season as the Lions will play their first international game in over ten years.
St. Brown is also a California native and played for the USC Trojans in Los Angeles. Speaking of Los Angeles, St. Brown is set to participate in the 2026 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in Los Angeles on February 13th, where he'll team up with actor, comedian, and famed Lions' fan Keegan-Michael Key.
As for the 2028 Summer Games, it will be the first Olympic Games to feature flag football. With NFL players expected to participate, Team USA is presumed to be heavily favored to win gold.
Why Team Germany and not Team USA?
St. Brown is one of the most talented and athletic players in the NFL, as a multi-time All-Pro, and it stands to reason he'd be able to secure a spot on Team USA's flag football team. So why the underdog Team Germany?
"USA already has enough players." St. Brown to the Detroit Free Press, "I mean, look out here. Like, it’s stacked. They got everyone here, so let me play for Team Germany." So St. Brown says he'll play for Team Germany "if I’m allowed to."
St. Brown figures to be a lock for Team Germany, but two years is a long time. Plans can change. The 2028 Summer Games will be close to the start of the NFL season, so he could forgo the Olympics in favor of remaining locked in with helping the Lions pursue their own gold, so to speak.

It's unknown at this stage who else would be teaming with St. Brown. His brother and St. Brown Podcast co-host, Equanimeous, may also take the opportunity to join Team Germany. The older St. Brown brother also plays wide receiver, but has not caught a pass in the regular season since 2023, when he was with the Chicago Bears.
That begs the question: Who's going to throw to St. Brown? “I don’t know," St. Brown answered. "I’d throw it to myself." St. Brown has already proven his passing ability in the NFL, throwing a touchdown pass to quarterback Jared Goff on primetime during the 2024 season. If anyone can pull off a dual QB/WR role, it's him.
