Aidan Hutchinson's 'best camp since 2022' should immediately start DPOY talk

The Detroit Lions have a lot riding on their defense this season, and more specifically, on the broad shoulders of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

Most conversations centered around the defense assume that the Lions will once again get a fantastic year from their top pass rusher while trying to make sure other things go right up front and in the defensive backfield. But that once again assumes Hutchinson will be elite.

Entering into 2026, there might not be any reason to be worried about that. Already, Hutchinson is off to a tear in training camp, and has once again been the most impressive defender on the field as he prepares for another year in the league.

DetroitLions.com reporter Tim Twentyman recently made a bold proclamation as to Hutchinson's play. As he explained, he feels as if it's the best camp Hutchinson has had in Detroit since he was a rookie back in 2022 given how active he has been.

"All-Pro edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson has looked terrific in camp. It's probably the best camp he's had since joining the league in 2022. He wins a lot of rushes in team periods from both sides of the line, and the Hutch rule was developed to let the offense finish a rep and quarterback Jared Goff finish a throw despite Hutchinson having what would be a clear sack on the play if he was allowed to contact the quarterback."

Hutchinson has enjoyed some great seasons before, so to say that he is looking that dominant consistently in practice should certainly open eyes. It's possibly the best proof yet that he could actually be heading for a season in which he stakes his claim to the elusive Defensive Player of the Year award.

Winning that award will likely require Hutchinson to lead the league in sacks and have multiple other impact plays such as forced fumbles and interceptions. The good news for him? Some of his more direct competition for the award in the past is beginning to age. Others are in new situations, such as Myles Garrett with the Los Angeles Rams.

There's no telling which players will struggle or get injured, or what other ones may emerge at this point. Given his domination in camp, Hutchinson might be one of the few is a sure thing given his situation, development and play.

Hutchinson feels even better now heading into the 2026 season

Perhaps the biggest reason for confidence? Health and comfort. Last season, Hutchinson was trying to prove he was durable enough to get through a whole year considering the violent nature of his broken leg in October of 2024. With 17 games played and no injury wear and tear, Hutchinson proved that questions didn't even need to be asked.

This season, Hutchinson finally feels as if he can breathe again. He is relaxed heading into this season, and feels at peace that he no longer has to answer questions about his leg or how he feels. That puts the focus squarely on football rather than everything else, which he feels allows him to play his best.

"(It feels) extremely liberating. I feel like a new person physically (and) mentally. I feel like there was a lot looming last year going into the season, and it just feels good. Everything's settled and I can really just focus on football. Keep what's important in front of me."

With the questions now behind him, Hutchinson is feeling good physically and mentally, and looking even better. That gives him his best chance to finally chase down some well-deserved personal hardware. It's not wise to bet against him finally making a long-awaited push to be the league's best defender.
