Lions free agent cornerback Emmanuel Moseley gave promising health update

The Detroit Lions took a chance on Emmanuel Moseley in free agency coming off an injury, and he had a promising update on his rehab.

If not for a torn ACL that cost him all but five games last season, Emmanuel Moseley would have surely gotten a solid multi-year deal in free agency. Instead, he got a one-year, $6 million deal from the Detroit Lions, as they refurbish and bolster their cornerback room.

The great grades for the Lions’ signing of Moseley are all over the place, owing to his emergence the last couple seasons with the 49ers (65.6 and 66.9 passer ratings against respectively, according to Pro Football Reference).

Deepening the fit between Moseley and the Lions, fellow newly-signed cornerback Cameron Sutton was his college teammate for three seasons at Tennessee. Sutton also hosted Moseley on his recruiting visit to the school, and it’s safe to assume Sutton did a bit of quick recruiting to get Moseley to sign with the Lions.

Moseley took his turn a the podium with his introduction to local Detroit media on Thursday. An easy topic was how he’s progressing in his rehab from his torn ACL, and he addressed it.

Via Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press:

"I would definitely say (rehab is) going well,” Moseley said. “I’m putting in a lot of work. About five months out now. We got a lot of time between training camp, so I’m going to continue to do that and then when it’s time for me to get out there and go, I’ll go.”"

Moseley also said he’ll do what he can as a new team leader behind the scenes while he’s working his way back to full strength.

The start of training camp will be 9-10 months out from his injury, and that’s the earliest Moseley is likely be able to take the field. Week 1 would be almost exactly 11 months removed from the injury, suffered on Oct. 9 last season, and it feels like a good possibility he will be able to play in some capacity. Maybe not the full complement of snaps he’ll eventually take, but on the field.
