Matchup 3: Lions LB Malcolm Rodriguez vs. Packers RB Aaron Jones

As mentioned earlier, there were two keys to stopping the Packers’ run game. The second key is, naturally, containing Aaron Jones. While the Packers have two running backs they use, Jones is far more effective than AJ Dillon. In fact, Jones is one of the most efficient runners in the entire league.

The Lions don’t have a lot going for them on the defensive side right now. What they do have, however, are young pieces they hope to develop into a core. Malcolm Rodriguez falls into that category, as he has had a promising rookie season so far. While Alex Anzalone will get the majority of snaps all season, Rodriguez has a large role too. For that matter, he’s the best linebacker the Lions have.

Detroit’s front is going to have to work together better than it has a lot of the season. Lately, they’ve shifted their scheme to try and funnel runs into specific gaps. If that plan continues then the defensive backs will be involved heavily too, but Rodriguez will get to shoot gaps as well. The rookie has his warts in coverage, but he needs to be at his best between the tackles and out in space against Jones on Sunday.
