Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs updates his return timeline

Lions second-year cornerback Jerry Jacobs has offered a promising update on his recovery from a torn ACL.

Jerry Jacobs showed himself to be quite an undrafted find at cornerback for the Detroit Lions last year, as Pro Football Focus in particular was very high on his work. But his rookie season also ended early, with a torn left ACL in Week 14 against the Denver Broncos.

Purely based on suffering his injury in mid-December, Jacobs was not going to be ready for Week 1 or the early part of the season even if there some hope or a chance he would be. He wasn’t thrilled with having his stay on the PUP list (NSFW) being extended into the regular season, but it was always the most likely outcome. There was, and is, no sense in rushing things with such a major injury.

Approaching his fourth missed game to start the season on Sunday, the minimum he has to miss on the PUP list, Jacobs offered a promising update regarding his recovery and possible return on Tuesday.

As he has often done through his recovery process, Jacobs updated his return timeline on Twitter.

“A couple more weeks” points to Jacobs being ready to go when the Lions come out of their Week 6 bye, in Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys. But he will apparently take a prominent next step by returning to practice on some level this week.

Down safety Tracy Walker (torn Achilles) for the season after he was injured in Week 3 against the Vikings, and with cornerback Amani Oruwariye struggling the way way he has so far this season, the Lions’ secondary could use some skill/talent reinforcements and a solid infusion of a bulldog mentality. Jacobs can certainly provide both when he’s ready to take the field.
