Former Lions receiver Calvin Johnson featured in NFL’s ‘Crucial Catch’ campaign

As part of the NFL’s “Crucial Catch” campaign this month, former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has shared a story regarding his mother.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, regular cancer screenings have fallen by the wayside for many people. This month the NFL has brought back its “Crucial Catch” campaign in concert with the American Cancer Society, entitled “Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer”, and former Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson is a part of it.

In the NFL’s latest Instagram post, Johnson shares the story of how early detection gave his mother another chance at life. The clip also features the story of Irma Rosales, a cancer patient from Denver that received lifesaving treatment through ACS’s CHANGE Program, which stands for Community Health Advocates implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity.

Johnson spent all nine seasons of his playing career with the Lions, earning induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. His 731 receptions, 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns are the top marks in franchise history in all three categories.

Johnson’s relationship with the team seems to be irreparably broken, with blame largely focused on team ownership. But his standing as one of the top two players in Lions’ franchise history is firmly cemented. Now, he’s part of the most important off-field initiative the league does–with a personal story to share and raise awareness for how early cancer detection can save a life.
