The Detroit Lions need to sign this player to complete their offensive line
After taking the best offensive lineman in the entire 2021 NFL draft class, the Detroit Lions appear to have one more spot open on their offensive line. There’s no doubt that general manager Brad Holmes can stay away from bringing in more lineman, but he could get greedy.
Of course, both offensive tackle spots are set in stone for the next four years with left tackle Taylor Decker and right tackle Penei Sewell. Center Frank Ragnow is due for a contract extension next season. And right guard Jonah Jackson is in the right direction with his progression.
What about right guard? As of now, I have offensive lineman Halapoulivaati Vaitai penciled in as the starter. However, his inconsistent play is leaving us wanting more, especially with his high price tag. Not to mention, the Lions can release him next season and save quite a bit of money.
Right tackle Tyrell Crosby has been mentioned quite a bit by fans. More specifically, switching him from a tackle to a guard. This is a possibility, but this would leave Detroit without a swing tackle and no depth. It isn’t a viable option.
Lastly, there is the 2020 fourth-round draft pick in guard Logan Stenberg. However, he is a wildcard option with the small amount of play he received last season.
Detroit could sit with this group and have a top-10 offensive line. However, one free agent has ties to offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn that would complete their offensive line.
That free agent is right guard Trai Turner. Now, Turner is coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro. He couldn’t find his footing with multiple injuries after being traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Maybe a fresh start and reuniting with coach Lynn could push Turner back to his pro-bowl form in Detroit. Giving the Lions an offensive line that is filled with five-plus players and great depth. Potentially an offensive line that this organization has never given former quarterback Matthew Stafford.
I’m sure quarterback Jared Goff and running back D’Andre Swift would appreciate it greatly. It would also give the Lions an identity to kick off their rebuild.
