Brian Hoyer, QB – Cut by the New England Patriots

Update: After the publishing of this article, Hoyer signed a three-year, $12 million deal to join the Indianapolis Colts per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Some Lions experts were surprised to see preseason standout Josh Johnson make the initial 53 man roster. He is one of three signal callers to make the final cut, along with franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford and recent trade acquisition David Blough.

While Johnson did show flashes of potential this preseason, Lions fans would feel their stomach turn into knots if he had to replace an injured Stafford in a regular season game. Adding a backup quarterback with more in-game experience could provide better injury insurance for Stafford.

This is where Hoyer comes in. Hoyer has a lot of NFL experience under his belt, as he has appeared in 65 games and has almost 10,000 yards to go along with 48 touchdowns to show for it. His most notable season was when he was the starter for 13 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2014, completing 55.3 percent of his passes that season with 3,326 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Signing Hoyer makes obvious sense for the Detroit Lions, as he has worked with head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn in the past, and can provide a veteran presence in the locker room for this rather young team.
