Mitch Hyatt, OT – Cut by the Dallas Cowboys

It’s not very often that talented offensive linemen are let go during August cut season, but the Dallas Cowboys did exactly that when they cut former Clemson Tiger Mitch Hyatt on Saturday.

While Hyatt showed NFL promise in his college career, he was cut simply because Dallas has 11 offensive linemen in front of his on the depth chart that they couldn’t let go of. As disappointing as that is for Hyatt, a new journey could be in store for him in Detroit.

As one of the most sought-after undrafted free agents earlier this offseason, Hyatt was coveted by many teams and can provide more depth for an offensive line unit that could use more of it. The Lions only have one true backup tackle on their roster, so having another would be huge if the injury bug were to come after the unit.

In addition to depth, Hyatt can provide competition for young Lions linemen such as Tyrell Crosby and Beau Benzschawel, pushing each of the young linemen to be the best they can be and practice hard to keep their NFL dreams alive.

Early reports indicate that Hyatt is going to sign with the Cowboys’ practice squad. But the Lions could certainly still add the former Tiger by offering him a spot on their final-53 instead.
