When NFL free agency started earlier this month, the Lions opted to part ways with former first round draft selection Eric Ebron. Detroit’s starting tight end was scheduled to make over $8 million this season, which was simply too high a price for his limited production and inconsistent play. The Lions also lost backup tight end Darren Fells to the Cleveland Browns in free agency.

Afterwards, the Lions looked to free agency themselves to help fill their voids. They signed veterans Luke Willson and Levine Toilolo, both of whom are seen as better blockers than receivers. So, it does appear Detroit could be in the market to find themselves another tight end.

In the third round, I have the Lions drafting Indiana tight end Ian Thomas. The 6-foot-5, 248 pound Thomas should be an upgrade over 2017 fourth round pick Michael Roberts who was suspended for the last game of last season due to missing team meetings.

Thomas is a raw prospect who possesses many of the traits you want in a young tight end. He’s talented and athletic with the ability to be a quality receiver and an effective in-line blocker. In Detroit, Thomas could see significant time as a rookie if he’s able to prove himself as a reliable redzone threat and receiver.
